Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong often referred to as ‘Palace of Great Happiness’, Pungthang Dewachen Phodrang in the local dialect, is an impressively beautiful fortress positioned at the junction of two pristine rivers, Pho Chhu and Mo Chuu rivers in the Punakha Valley of Bhutan. The history of this fortress can be traced back to 1637, built by the unifying figure of Bhutan, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
With intricately beautiful woodwork and frescoes, the resemblance of Bhutanese architecture can be depicted. This significant administrative centre also abodes sacred religious texts and relics. Additionally, the Punakha Dzong serves as a venue for this yearly jollification called Punakha Tshech, which is a religious celebration of Bhutanese community, coming together to socialize, followed by special customs, mask dances and to receive blessings. Interestingly, the Punakha Dzong is tucked between lush greenery which furthermore enhances its overall charm.
Therefore, Punakha Dzong makes an erected testament of Bhutanese cultural heritage and historical allure and magnetizes pilgrims, sightseeing enthusiasts, cultural devotees and architecture appreciators from all over.
